Its genetics could be a mixture of African or East Asian landraces Sativas and neighbouring countries or local hashplants, which were similar to the landraces of the wider Middle East region. Don't forget that in 1880 - 1920 Southern Greece and more specifically the Peloponnese (37° N latitude) was a leading producer of hashish of a world class product.
Other possible ancestors of the calamari variety are the famous Lebanese hashplants, which are also related to most traditional Middle Eastern varieties.
Lebanon and Egypt appear to have the oldest history of cannabis cultivation in the eastern Mediterranean region. Some old authoritative writings of local farmers spoke of neighbouring eastern immigrants mainly from Egypt who taught them how to grow hemp for hashish production around 1870-1880. "Cannabis" was the name of the hashplant variety that farmers grew extensively in the northern Peloponnese, Argos and Tripoli (37° latitude) until 1930.
Given the fact that wild hemp plants also thrived in some northern areas of the country and the Greek industry (Cannabourgia) cultivated hemp for fibre from 1915 to 1957, it is possible that these genetics are part of the "Hellenic" genetic profile.
Kalamata Red is closer to the NLD hemp varieties. You will find different phenotypes with similar plant structure (Sativa dominance), stable resin abundance and penetrating hashy terpenes.
These are plants with older interstitial spaces which in an optimal situation can reach up to 5 - 6 metres in height.
They show very high resistance to stressful conditions, threatening insects and mites, pathogenic fungi and prolonged drought, while they react excellent at very warm climates without requiring high amounts of nutrients and constant watering.
A fairly rich organic soil with good drainage is sufficient for them to thrive.
Kalamata Red is undoubtedly a variety with dominant Sativa genes and characteristics, earthy oldschool terpenes and a creative, energetic, long-lasting effect that immediately imparts a state of euphoria and bliss.
As with most landrace/heirloom varieties you should expect a small percentage (below 5%) of plants that could under high stress conditions express hermaphroditism characteristics.
The main aroma is a strong hashy, penetrating earthy wood smell, accompanied by resin/leather tones and a mildly pleasant lemon and lime flavour.
Dried fruit of Kalamata Red
